How to Change a Tire

Chevy Mechanic Working on Tires

When you have a flat, or you’re just curious about how to change a tire, knowing how to change your tires is a great skill to have. We’ll give you the step-by-step guide below, as well as some tips for how often to change your car tires. Learn more about tires below before your next visit to our service center in Live Oak.

Changing Your Chevrolet Tires Yourself

How to change a tire requires some common tools and some time dedicated to the process. Lake City drivers will need a lug wrench, jack, spare tire or new tire(s), and their owner’s manual for their vehicle. Then, you’re ready to get started:

  1. Move to a safe place and turn on your hazard lights if you’re on the side of the road before moving forward with these steps for your safety and the safety of others.
  2. Apply the parking brake and wheel wedges under the other tires so that your vehicle is secure.
  3. Remove the wheel cover or hubcap from the tire you’re changing, then loosen the lug nuts.
  4. Use the jack to raise your vehicle and remove the lug nuts.
  5. Remove the current tire and mount the new or spare tire.
  6. Tighten the lug nuts, then lower your vehicle back to the ground.

How Often to Change Car Tires

There are factors like how often you drive, how you drive, and how often you get tire rotations that all play a factor in when you need to change your tires. If you rotate your tires more regularly, your tires will experience more even wear over time, and you’ll get better gas mileage all at the same time. Your user’s manual will also have more specific information about your make and model and when to generally change your tires. At Wes Haney Chevrolet, Inc., we offer tire rotations, and they can easily be done during your next oil change!

How to Put Air in Your Tires

If you’re curious about how to put air in your tires because your psi is low, we also have Jasper drivers covered:

  • Park your vehicle by the air dispenser and ensure that the hose can reach each tire.
  • Remove the cap on the tire valve of the first tire you’re filling.
  • Check the air pressure in the tire by using a tire gauge. It’s helpful to do this at home, even if you head to the gas station to fill your tires. Tires can heat up when driving, and this can actually give you an inaccurate psi reading for your tires.
  • Use the air hose to add small amounts of air in short bursts while checking the tire gauge each time until you reach the desired psi.

How Many Miles Can You Drive on a Spare Tire?

We highly recommend bringing in your car to our service center if you’re driving on a spare. Spares are only meant to be driven up to 50 miles, and it’s not recommended to drive high speeds on a spare tire. Your spare should tell you its specific limits, but most can’t be driven above 50 mph.
